Method
From the family
- Mary doesn't like onions, so she skips the fresh onion and uses onion powder instead.
- Keep the rice seasoning packet — don't throw it out! Near East brand is Mary's go-to, but any quick-cook long grain & wild rice will do.
- Dutch oven method: cook the vegetables the same way, then add the broth and deglaze the bottom of the Dutch oven. Bring to a low simmer, then pour in the rice and cook until done. Add the cream last.

Mary emailed this one with the subject line “Soop” and the heading “The Best Soup You Will Ever Consume.” It’s a creamy chicken and wild rice soup — the roux and heavy cream do the heavy lifting, and the rice’s own seasoning packet flavors the base.
