Method

From the family

  • Grandma always added a pinch more nutmeg than written — adjust to taste.
  • A handful of tart apples (Granny Smith) among sweeter ones keeps it from being cloying.
Read the story

We’ve made this pie every Thanksgiving for as long as anyone can remember. Grandma Ruth learned it from her mother and never wrote down the amounts — this version was finally pinned down one afternoon by measuring everything as she went. The lattice top is optional; she usually just cut three slits and called it done.
